What are essential oils?

Essential oils are the result of leaves, bark, roots, petals, or buds, being steam distilled or cold pressed. This process releases naturally occurring chemicals in these plants and organic matter, which are then collected as essential oils. While the name would imply that they have an oily feel, they actually feel quite dry and are very easily absorbed. These oils are actually used by the plant itself while it is alive, for everything from infection control to healing. It only makes sense then that humans now have a way to harness these incredible compounds for themselves.

Synthetic vs. Natural

Knowing now then that essential oils are derived purely from plants, it is then necessary to discuss the difference between essential oils and synthetic oils. If you are shopping around for oils based on price, you will likely notice a huge price difference between certain brands. This is because some of your options are synthetic. If you truly want to harness the power that these oils have then it is best to avoid synthetics. These are filled with unnatural and factory-made chemicals which can be harsh and irritating to your skin, and will not produce the same benefits as natural essential oils.

What are they used to treat?

When it comes to why people use essential oils, the list is long. Each different blend has its own unique properties which means that the potential uses are long. Some of these include

  • Fighting the common cold
  • Alleviating pains
  • Improving digestion
  • Relaxing muscles
  • Home cleaning
  • Reducing stress
  • Detoxifying the air

Clearly, there is no one right way to use essential oils. What is most important is knowing which oils have what properties, and how to use them properly. For a full breakdown of what each type of oil is used for, check out this article by the Global Healing Center.

What are the best brands?

Not only are there countless types of essential oils you can purchase, but there is also a wide variety of brands to choose from as well. Not all essential oils are created equally though, so sometimes it can be hard to know which to choose. For an easy breakdown, check out this quick guide by Essential Oil Haven.

How should you apply them?

There are different ways that you can use essential oils and some of them depend on the oil itself while others are personal preference. Two very popular ways are to apply them directly to the skin as well as to diffuse them into the air.

Physical Application:

Due to how potent essential oils are, it is often necessary to dilute them when applying them directly to your skin. This prevents against skin irritation that may come as the result of applying them to sensitive areas of the body. This is a simple process, just mix them with a carrier oil such as

  • Argan oil
  • Olive oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Vegetable oil
  • Rosehip oil

These oils will be absorbed into the skin easily and help to dilute the strong nature of essential oils. Simply mix 2-3 drops of the oil of your choosing with a carrier oil and rub it into your skin using the palm of your hand. Moving in a circular motion will help it to absorb easily and quickly.

Oral ingestion is also an option and just requires that you mix 1 to 2 drops of the oil of your choosing into a glass of water, a meal, or a cup of tea. Before ingesting orally or using it topically make sure the oil you choose is intended and effective to be used that way.

Aromatic Application:

This type of application a bit more casual than physical application. To do this you can either simply hold up your bottle of essential oils and inhale from it directly. Or you can diffuse the oils in a specific oil diffuser or a humidifier. Before doing any one of these simply make sure your oil is intended to be inhaled and be sure to research how much can be inhaled at one time.

Essential Oils are one of the biggest health trends to arise in recent years, and it seems that they are definitely here to stay. Harness the natural power of plants with and start feeling better today.
